Memory of mum

Hi Sue, Dad,
Here is my tribute for the remembrance.

In beloved memory of my mum Ann Rosa Cockrill

My memories of mum are of a very special and completely unique lady.

When me and my sister were young mum was always there in time of need.  I can remember having measles, gastroenteritis, the flu, glandular fever and more.  However, on every occasion mum was there both night and day either giving comfort and care or simply cleaning up and making me comfortable.

Mum was always lots of fun and full of eccentricities.  A keen knitter at one time she had almost an attic full of wool!  I can remember mum knitting me the iconic Starsky and Hutch cardigan amongst many other things.

At all times mum was kind not only to us but also to friends and even strangers.  She had a child like openness that also made her vulnerable to being let down or hurt.

Raised as an only child and under appreciated at school mum had some hidden gifts that took time to bear fruit.  However, in her middle years all of these gifts of art and craft found an outlet with a return to a faith in Christ that had first been stirred in her early teenage years.

I will always remember her stories of evacuation to Sheffield in WW2.  Also her accounts of Spitfires in action over Dartford.

Having joined me following my adult baptism at Welling Pentecostal Church mum was often called upon to provide artwork for the Sunday school or craftwork for the banners that hung around the hall.  Mum even provided all of the illustrations for a children’s story that I wrote back in 1990.  Although sadly, I lost the originals I still have plenty of copies.

I also have various cards of that she drew and sent to me for encouragement.

These and many other things, such as mum’s sense of style, love of Knick knacks and ornaments, feeding the birds and squirrels in the garden, tea and scones, coffee and cake leave an indelible memory.

Last but not least, I remember mum’s bread pudding, rhubarb crumble, apple pie, and most of all Christmas mince pies which made so many occasions delicious as well as delightful.

God bless you mum.

I know that you are with Jesus so see you anon!
